Nattokinase dissolves blood clots

Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soy beans. It’s eaten mainly in the Eastern part of Japan. Like marmite in the UK, the Japanese either love it or hate it. 70% of those surveyed liked the taste and 30% disliked it. It was noticed that natto eaters suffered far less heart attacks than non natto eaters and in 1987 Sumi et al extracted the active component which they named nattokinase.

.Recent research has demonstrated that NK has potent fibrinolytic activity, antihypertensive, anti-atherosclerotic, and lipid-lowering, antiplatelet, and neuroprotective effects……. Available evidence suggests that NK is a unique natural compound that possesses several key cardiovascular beneficial effects for patients with CVD and is therefore an ideal drug candidate for the prevention and treatment of CVD. Nattokinase is a promising alternative in the management of CVD.

Do not use if you are taking the blood thinner warfarin or any other anti-coagulant as there is a risk of bleeding.

Nattokinase Adverse reactionsSmall short-term trials evaluating the effect of nattokinase reported no adverse reactions. There is a theoretical risk of bleeding, based on a case report of acute cerebellar hemorrhage in a patient with a history of ischemic stroke. Thrombosis was reported after substitution of nattokinase for warfarin in a patient with a mechanical aortic valve. Rare cases of late-onset anaphylaxis with natto have been attributed to poly (gamma-glutamic acid), a product of the fermentation process that may be present in nattokinase supplements.

Chris’s suggestion for how  to take it.   Start off slowly with 100 mg a day.  The best time is just before bed.  After a week increase to 200 mg.  I note that there are 500 mg supplements available so I think it’s safe to go up to 500 mg after a couple of weeks.
